What we do

TNPI serves Tribal communities through capacity-building programs and initiatives that strengthen leadership, governance and community development. By collaborating with partners across ASU and beyond, TNPI creates innovative opportunities for Tribal leaders, government staff, Tribal citizens, students and organizations working with Tribal governments and communities.


Indigenous Leadership Academy


Since 2022 ILA has been a nationally recognized leadership development program for Tribal citizens, that prepares emerging leaders to address the complex challenges facing Tribal Nations.

Rooted in Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and leading, ILA equips community leaders and working professionals with the knowledge, skills, networks and practical experience needed to lead effectively, strengthen sovereignty, and develop innovative, community-driven solutions that create lasting impact. 

ILA offers general and topic-specific cohorts throughout the year. Past topic-specific cohorts include: 

  • 2025: healthcare, education 
  • 2026: sustainability and environmental stewardship, water sovereignty
