Our history

This timeline traces the evolution of the Tribal Nations Policy Institute (TNPI) from its founding in 2006 to its continued growth and impact today. Rooted in a commitment to advancing Tribal sovereignty, TNPI was created to address the complex and expanding responsibilities of Tribal governments through research, policy development, and community partnership. 

Over time, the Institute has adapted to emerging challenges and opportunities, expanding its programs, deepening its engagement with Tribal Nations, and elevating Indigenous knowledge within academic and policy spaces. Each milestone reflects TNPI’s ongoing dedication to supporting Native communities and strengthening governance, leadership, and self-determination across Indian Country.

While its core mission—to support and advance Tribal sovereignty—has remained constant, its approach has evolved to meet the changing needs of Tribal Nations in an increasingly complex world.
